THE ENGLISH VERSION OF THE TEXT IS BELOW
estructuras inconscientes……. orden interpretado—– orden interpretado……
estructuras inconscientes.
Previo a
interpretar estas manchas es observar y dejar surgir las imágenes;
luminosos y oscuros.
común a todas ellas.

THE SWORD AND THE INK
An essay on this series from the perspective of hermeneutic philosophy, considering its semiological and symbolic values
In 1991 I made hundreds of paintings using a technique called decalcomania.
Decalcomania was used by the Surrealists and was especially
developed by Max Ernst. This technique was perfectly suited to the
programmatic lines designed by Surrealism, as it allows one to obtain
iconic, highly defined, and organic images without the total intervention
of the artist’s will or reasoning. It is a kind of automatic painting
through which images emerge directly from our non-conscious part,
from a part of our mind ready to create from unconscious material,
from an amalgam of memories, images, and thoughts that, hidden
somewhere in our mind, struggle to come out and manifest themselves.
It involves creating paint stains through a specific technique and
then letting the imagination be seduced by the voluptuous, organic,
and suggestive forms that appear on the paper. The artist does not
voluntarily decide to draw a face, an animal, a plant; rather, the images
emerge directly from a non-conscious part of the mind, an uncontrolled
part, in a phenomenon well known to everyone when we observe abstract
forms provided by nature, such as clouds, damp stains, or any
other abstract organic material that in painting we might call a
chaogenic field. This is an ontological phenomenon, insofar as there exists
in our mind at a supra-conscious level a need for order, for identification,
or more appropriately, a need for interpreting the
world—an irresistible force that drives us to leave no event unfolding
before our eyes uninterpreted. The search for meaning, then, impels
us to confront the formless, the chaotic, the undifferentiated (the
uroboros) with a clarifying, interpretive will: ultimately, a need for order
and discernment, for separation and delimitation. I believe that ultimately
it is a need for cosmification.
the Rorschach test teaches us how this hermeneutic force of our mind
is selective and how, through the analysis of the different interpretations
the subject makes of the parts of the drawings, the subject’s
personality, psychic tendencies, and structures for ordering the
world are revealed.
The ontological process by which we seek to interpret the world, and in this
way order it—in this case a hidden order within the undifferentiated
chaos of the stains—is a process that, let us say, illuminates, that casts the
light of discernment where the darkness of chaos previously existed.
This is the logic of the Rorschach test, which, traveling the path like a
boomerang, casts light and discernment onto the structures
of personality, retracing the path the mind took to construct that image
and arriving at the structures hidden in the unconscious.
to illustrate the above more clearly, I shall speak of a round-trip
path from:…1- the unconscious structures that seek an order,….
2- it achieves this in a sutured, distinct, and ordered image…….3- and through
that interpreted order, through that image…….4- we can deduce the
unconscious structures that formed it, that is, the order structuring
the subject’s personality, the master lines of their conduct that remain
hidden in the unconscious. it would be a round-trip path as I show below
:
unconscious structures……. ……. interpreted order—– interpreted order……
unconscious structures.
is an ontological-hermeneutic back-and-forth structure: the need for interpretation
allows us to interpret our needs, or rather: our hermeneutic
structures allow us to hermeneuticize
our structures.
in the case of the images I was creating, I was not trying to psychoanalyze
myself, to interpret my mental structures or my personality; I was simply
extracting, one after another, images from the paint stains that seemed attractive
to me, and I was compiling them into a kind of natural history, a
taxonomy of the forms that the mind sees in the randomness generated by
the paint, and my only intention was to verify and observe
them, to observe the behavior of the paint under certain given conditions.
But, like the demiurge that Plato described, he was imposing the world of
ideas onto the formless, onto formless matter.
More than ten years passed before I had contact with symbolic
hermeneutics through the books of the Hermeneusis collection by Anthropos.
But when I began to read the concept of symbolic suture of a
real wound that Patxi Lanceros explains in the dictionary of hermeneutics
, I immediately related it to this pictorial work.
In the dictionary entry dedicated to the word “meaning,” Patxi Lanceros
talks about the fact that “in the beginning there was plenitude, totality, the
uroboros, time zero. It is perceived as darkness and silence. In that non-place, the
world and the psyche are still one. Prior to all knowledge and all action. There
is still no distinction or criterion” indeed, he could perfectly well be speaking
of the undifferentiated chaotic field that is the paint stain, an unactualized
plenitude, the primordial chaos, something akin to the Tao of Chinese
philosophy: it is not nothingness, but an emptiness full of potentiality.
Patxi Lanceros goes on to say that ” the first action exerted upon and from
that uroboric totality is an action of rupture… of which all cosmogonic
accounts speak… the originary tear from which God, nature, and man arise..
. and that rupture, that originary tear, is transmitted in images that
allude to light amidst the darkness, to the separation of sky and earth, to
the separation of the continent and the waters… that first tear is followed by
others, creation is fulfilled through successive ruptures, through successive
separations that generate individuals, genera, species. But it is the primordial
tear (the real fissure) that provokes the
longing to return to origins and the promised land” in my case, I would take a
scalpel and cut out a silhouette on the stain of the image that had come
to me, producing a rupture of undifferentiated chaos, a tear, a separation,
just as Patxi Lanceros describes it. it was like shedding light in the darkness
, separating figure and ground.
Patxi Lanceros goes on to say: ” the symbolic suture is the search for forms
of suture, which though they never manage to restore the broken unity, involve
the fragments in dispersion… symbolic suture… in the symbol there is action,
material implication. The
Greek symbol indicates to unite, bind, link, (it is the piece of Union that is always
the symbol). It is the astragalus, the split vertebra. That is why every symbolic suture
and every symbol must be understood as a bond or suture “(
Patxi Lanceros ). once again I establish an analogy with the process of creating
images through stains: in the act of perceiving the image, the chaogenic
pigmentary field appears as interpreted chaos, a sense is given to it, meaning
is given to it, the meaning of the stain is constructed by delimiting it
with a line and by definitively separating it by cutting it from the paper. We
construct meaning by grouping elements that are useful to us as an
iconic image, and discarding the rest as background. It is the paradigm
of the construction of meaning, a separation, a delimitation that simultaneously
groups together, implies the other elements, allowing us to see a sutured
and organic image.
The unperceived is by definition undifferentiated for the subject. To open one
‘s eyes is to break the unity of the world into fragments, to delimit it
with contours. We fragment the world into differentiated units, and in doing
so, we endow it with meaning. Now, perception as scission is at the same time
the symbolic suture of the real wound. To perceive is, in turn, the implication
of these fragments in recognizable units; it is to recompose the broken unity
by endowing it with meaning. We group them together to form perceptual figures
or images based on stable laws such as: law of proximity, law of similarity
, law of continuity, closure, figure-ground contrast… the tragic wound and the
symbolic suture occur simultaneously, at the very instant we perceive
the image of the stain: we discriminate and split the stain apart, and at the
same time we group and implicate the fragments. Fissure and suture in the
same moment of perception, of consciousness, of the construction of the
stain’s meaning.
interpreting these stains is observing and letting the images emerge; afterwards,
cutting out the part in which we see the meaning, or delimiting that meaning
with ink lines. In any case, separating figure and ground, breaking the stillness of
the undifferentiated chaos that is the Stain, and afterwards, or at the same time,
recomposing the broken unity by implicating the fragments in a sutured,
organic image.
the interpretation of paint stains would thus be understood as a paradigm
for the construction of meaning. Of the hermeneutics of meaning.
Hermeneutics as an essential interpretation of the world.
Hermeneutics as an ontological paradigm of being in the world. Perceiving
the world is interpreting it, and the answer to the enigma posed by the paint
stain already lies within the interpreter. The interpretation of the world, or of
the stain, is a creative act.
The symmetrical images we have seen, those multiple unfoldings into images
within images, are already observed by Lévi-Strauss and Franz
Boas in ancient Chinese art, as well as in the graphic and plastic
arts of Asia and America. My symmetries partake of this spirit common to
aboriginal arts of miniaturization, symmetry, and the enclosure of images
within images.
The mythical discourse of these stains are the associations of mental images
projected onto them. It is constituted by blocks, by swarms
of images charged with affective and intellectual significance.
Deciphering or translating these images is a task destined for the multiplicity
of meanings, because, like myth, these images are not translated or deciphered;
they are semantic presences, symbols, that contain their own
meaning, multiple. This series of works contains a semantic density
proper to myth, which overflows the linearity of the signifier on all sides;
they refer to the metaphor of the echo, or the palace of mirrors, in which
each word refers in every sense to cumulative significations.
For an artist, images are their sacred nourishment and through this
intimacy with painting, with images, the artist lovingly penetrates the intimacies
of the subconscious. I penetrate the humid and fruitful realm
of subconscious images. A place pregnant with multiple meanings, at
times contradictory, luminous and dark.
But images are the wrapping of pictorial matter, and as we know, every
wrapping, every container, as Bachelard points out, appears no doubt as
neither as precious nor as substantial as the matter wrapped.
Without a doubt, the liquid matter of painting, and its geobiodynamic
transformations in the form of fractal branchings are the soul of this
work. In this brilliant field of images, we must not lose sight of the core that
animates them, which is none other than the flow of water, of mud.
That mud which is painting is the privileged subject of all human and divine
creation. The origin of the world lies in the primordial waters, and the mythical
origin of man and woman lies in the clay shaped by the hands of
the divine creator.
The images we see form a labyrinthine journey through the creative
process, through the process of interpreting the world. When we ask a
question of an artistic text, that question already prefigures the answer
. The answers were already within ourselves, and therefore the questions
prefigure and precede the answers.
The succession of images projected from my mind onto formless
matter may be the search for a center, for a common place among
them all.
The diurnal regime of the image and the nocturnal regime of the image,
coined by Gilbert Durand, both appear in the process of creating
these images. “The nocturnal regime of the image,” the nocturnal
melody, is content to penetrate and dissolve, to unite microcosms and
macrocosms, to integrate matter and thought.” (1)
Painting would be the nocturnal water, intimacy, contemplation,
undifferentiated chaos, the nocturnal, the feminized and maternal
abyss, the dark and protective womb.
The diurnal regime of the image, solar thought, names, separates, discerns,
illuminates undifferentiated chaos with the image-creating reason.
Every deep psychological process creates a tool, a characteristic utensil
. In the case of the diurnal regime of the image, it is the sword or the
knife. They are favored symbols of separation and discernment, of the
Kingdom of antiphrasis, the opposition between chaos and order, light
and darkness, elevation and fall, figure and background.
Gilbert Durand speaks of the archetypal pattern of water and of dye
in these terms: “ water itself, whose primary intention seems to be to wash,
is subverted under the impulse of the nocturnal constellations of the imagination:
it becomes the vehicle par excellence for dye. Such is the deep water
that Bachelard, following in the footsteps of Bonaparte, studies
through the metaphors of Poe. At the same time that water loses its
clarity, it thickens. It offers the gaze all the varieties of purple, like the
iridescence and reflections of changeable silk. It is composed of veins
of different colors, like a marble; it materializes to such a point that it
can be dissected with the tip of a knife.”( 2)
This text by Durand and the rest of the book “The Anthropological
Structures of the Imaginary” perfectly inspire and explain the psychological,
anthropological, and archetypal implications of this pictorial
work, in which water as a nocturnal symbol of the imaginary, and the
sword (in this case, the scalpel I use to cut the stains) as a diurnal symbol
of the imaginary, converge in the act of artistic creation, showing
the vocation of completeness that art operates within the individual artist.
On this creative path that unites the two regimes of the imagination, diurnal
and nocturnal, water and chaotic painting represent the descent, the excavation.
And the pen nib and the scalpel would represent the diurnal
regime of discernment, separation, and the ascent to the heights and the
clarity of the image drawn, cut out, separated, and made distinct.
“ The rational, (writes Minkowsky), delights in the abstract, in the
immobile, in the solid and the rigid. It discerns and separates, and therefore objects
, with their sharp contours, occupy a privileged place in its vision of the world.
Thus it arrives at the precision of form. Here we clearly have the syndrome of the
sword,” (3)
